Baraka Fish Farm
Baraka Fish Farm, located in Eldoret, Kenya, is a collaborative project between Enactus UCU and Redhill Baraka School for orphans in Gachi, Kenya. The goal of the project is to harvest fish and vegetables in a sustainable way , while supporting the school community in two ways - providing jobs and financing the school's orphaned students. In 2016, we had an aquaponics system installed, which facilitates the re-use of water from the fish ponds to fertilize the vegetables.
As of now, we have been successfully harvesting and selling small amounts of vegetables to the surrounding community and local schools. However, the first harvest of fish, which was the main source of income was not completely successful as some of the fishlings died. Therefore the project has not managed to reach its financial goals of funding the children's education and settling salaries for the workers who take care of the farm.
Regardless of these setbacks, we are determined to make this project a success. Your donations will be used to buy new fishlings so that our ponds are well-stocked and also make sure that fresh water is pumped into the ponds. Part of the donations will go towards the purchase of feed for the fish which will enable them to grow until they are ready to be sold. We also plan to engage experts in the field of fish farming to train the workers that are on the working on the fish farm so that they are equipped to run the farm effectively. The end goal is for us to see the Children of Redhill Baraka School have a secured future as a result of our work through the fish farm.
