GAZA: Help Keep 7-year-old Nariman & Mahmoud in School

When Israel bombed the home that seven-year-old Nariman Bassam Elakkad lived in with her family in Gaza, she was able to escape with her family. But, Nariman still came back to the scene of destruction to rescue her pet fish and two birds. Footage of Nariman and her cousin Mahmoud searching in the rubble of the blast went viral on social media.

Standing in the middle of all that destruction, Nariman and her cousin Mahmoud Abdelgaber Elakkad were seen in a video smiling after they rescued Nariman's fish. They said that they would continue searing for the canary birds. They had hope, despite being surrounded by destruction.

When I spoke to Nariman's mom, who was forced to evacuate Gaza with her family to move to Khan Younis in Palestine, she was hesitant to accept help because she didn't want to "burden" anyone. Here's what she had to say:

"The fact that you all are thinking of us and for the first time are paying attention to the devastating situation we're facing is enough. Thank you," she told me. 

But now is the time to help. The suffering of children in Gaza and Palestine has been documented. When faced with such destruction year after year, children may drop out of school, could be forced into child labor, or much worse.

Nariman and Mahmoud have lost their home and almost all of their belongings.

Children like Nariman and Mahmoud deserve to receive the psychological and trauma help that they need to be able to lead fulfilled and dignified lives, and to return to school.

عندما قصفت إسرائيل منزل الطفلة الفلسطينية ابنة السبع سنوات ناريمان باسم العقاد في غزة،استطاعت الطفلة النجاة مع عائلتها.بعدها انتشرت صور ناريمان وهي تبحث عن سمكتها وعصفورين وسط الدمار الهائل الذي خلّفه القصف الإسرائيلي.

برفقة قريبها محمود العقاد بدت ناريمان في فيديو وهي تبتسم بعدما عثرت على السمكة قائلة سنحاول ايضا إنقاذ عصفوريّ الكناري.

جرى توثيق معاناة الاطفال في فلسطين خصوصاً في غزة.

الاطفال مثل ناريمان ومحمود يستحقون الحصول على مساعدة نفسية ومادية لتجاوز الصدمة والمعاناة ومحاولة استئناف حياة كريمة طبيعية والعودة الى مدارسهم.
